NRL clubs sign with betting agency Ezybet

STRUGGLING rugby league clubs are about to sign en masse with an on-line betting agency as they start to feel the strain of the global financial crisis.
On the day The Daily Telegraph revealed that Knights star Jarrod Mullen has been dragged into a messy stewards inquiry because of his relationship with jockey Allan Robinson, the Sharks and Knights agreed in principle to deals with little-known agency Ezybet.

Other clubs are poised to follow, including South Sydney - despite co-owners Russell Crowe and Peter Holmes a Court vowing a year ago to remove poker machines from its embattled leagues club because it fostered problem gambling.

The deals - which are still awaiting approval from the NRL - are similar to the one Gold Coast struck during grand final week. Fans will be able to bet on Sharksbet.com.au and Knightsbet.com.au on a host of sporting fixtures.

"We have to explore new revenue streams," Sharks chief executive Tony Zappia said. "You can't quantify how much we can make out it. In hard financial times such as these, more people seem to gamble so it makes sense to benefit off that."

The timing of the announcement seemed ill-advised after it emerged Mullen was quizzed by Racing NSW chief steward Ray Murrihy because his mobile number appeared on Robinson's phone records.

Robinson is at the centre of investigations into betting activities at country tracks involving a mystery punter. Mullen is not accused of any wrongdoing.

"This deal should be seen in its own light, and not because of the issue with Jarrod," Knights chief executive Steve Burraston insisted.

"(Questions about integrity) only involve dishonest people. And I'd like to think there are no dishonest people in our game."

NRL chief executive David Gallop said the deals were being examined by lawyers - but he did not oppose the principle of being aligned with betting agencies.

The NRL has a lucrative sponsorship deal with TAB Sportsbet.

"Gambling will happen around the game anyway," he said. "We think it's only right that sports such as ours have an ability to be compensated for the association."

It remains to be seen how much clubs stand to benefit from the association but Ezybet general manager Ryan Kay estimated about "$1 million a season".

"While the revenue opportunity is clearly attractive we are approaching these arrangements carefully to ensure that the right safeguards are in place to protect the game," Gallop said.

Souths boss Shane Richardson said his club had not signed a deal yet and its members were being sounded out about whether they wanted to sign the deal.

Richardson, you fat heap of shit, when have you ever asked the members what they wanted and actually made your decision accordingly.

Does a 10 year deal at ANZ ring a bell.....

What a deceitful piece of dirt this bloke is!

Fat prick. :sniper:

Now that I have had my LNPE bashing for the day (there still may be another couple in me yet) I want to pass on how I have heard this deal will work.

From what I have been told there will be a base yearly fee paid to clubs, and as stated in the article, a club betting website, rabbitohsbet.com.au....

On top of that, a commision rate will be paid individually to all clubs signed up, based on betting turnover for the year on their individual sites.

So in the space of 12 months, South Sydney will have gone from the moral high ground of helping the poor and needy stay away from gambling, to spruiking all members and fans to join up to a bookmaker and bet bet bet!!!

Only at the Rabbitohs!

That Crowe would even consider taking money off sleazy bookmakers after his moral crusade against gambling is shameful and humiliating. Russell, it seems, has no shame.

If Russell goes ahead with this deal, he can expect many of us not to renew memberships.

And you don't use any services provided by the state government all of which are in part funded by gambling taxes?

It was Russell, Rocky, who publicly condemned the evils of gambling. It was Russell who publicly took the high moral road telling a smitten world that it "wasn't appropriate for the Rabbitohs to take the gambling dollar from welfare cheques" of a high-unemployment area like Redfern. It was Russell with crocodile tears who told the media that he was "distressed" that the leagues club would have poker machines. It wasn't me.

Russell gets $30 million a film. In his career thus far he has earned something like $200 million. Crowe can afford to moralise and then back it up with his wealth and celebrity. I can't, Rocky.

I'm not the one who moralised about the evils of gambling and then did a giant blackflip. That was Russell.

Yet you slag me and not Russell. Which is hardly surprising, given that you somehow managed to excuse Holmes a Court's outrageously shameful behaviour with Firepower.

For Rocky's attention:

19/9/07: The Daily Telegraph - "Crowe first approached Holmes a Court with the (no gambling) idea months ago..."There is a time and a place for gambling and I don't believe that South Sydney is the time or the place. We don't believe it (gambling) is an appropriate part of the new business."

20/12/07: Holmes a Court quoted on ABC Sport - "Russell Crowe pushed the proposal because he is worried about the social cost of gambling and there are other ways to make money."

12/8/08: The Daily Telegraph - "Rabbitohs owner Russell Crowe is distressed at the likely prospect of South Sydney Leagues Club re-opening with poker machines..."

RUSSELL CROWE = HUGE HYPOCRITE
