A DEFIANT Roy Asotasi has promised to "lead Souths out of the mess" and made the stunning prediction that the winless Rabbitohs will still make the top eight.
The under-siege skipper yesterday opened up about the Rabbitohs' disastrous start to the Centenary season - admitting he is "hurting" now more than at any other time in his 115-game career.

Asotasi, the man last year touted as the Rabbitohs' $450,000-a-year saviour, said he was determined to lift the club from the bottom of the table.

"I have never been put in this position before," Asotasi (left) said.

"It is new territory and it hurts. The leaders of this team have to step up to the plate. I need to lead the way and it is time for myself and Kiddy (David Kidwell) to show leadership and the time to do it is now.

"We will lead the club out of the mess."

Stung by harsh criticism - including having Rabbitohs great John Sattler say the Kiwi Test forward isn't playing like a first grader - Asotasi admitted his form was down.

"We need to get respect back and that includes me," Asotasi. "Sattler was a legend and he has the right to make comments like that.

"My form hasn't been up there and that's something I need to step up.

"It is something I want to fix sooner rather than later."

After playing in star-studded teams, including the Bulldogs' premiership-winning team in 2004, Asotasi said resurrecting the Rabbitohs' season was his toughest test yet.

"Without a doubt," he said.

"Playing internationals, you have all these good players around you. When I was at the Dogs we had (Willie) Mason, (Mark) O'Meley and Sonny Bill (Williams). At Souths we have a great bunch of players, but it is my biggest test because we don't have those experienced players."

But even without the big names, Asotasi refuses to concede the NRL wooden-spoon favourites can't make the finals in 2008.

"We are confident we can still make the eight," Asotasi said. "A couple of years ago the Dragons lost six on the trot and they made the finals.

"We can do that too."

Asotasi admitted other NRL teams thought the Rabbitohs were "soft".

'Yeah, it hurts," Asotasi said.

"No doubt. But that is other people saying that. They can play us however they like. If they feel like playing us through the middle, come at your own free will."

The 26-year-old said lack of experience - not effort - was costing the Rabbitohs victory.

"It is just a confidence thing. When you lose that many games (six), your confidence isn't really sky-rocketing," he said. "Losing Nigel Vagana and Craig Wing has hurt.

"Wing was brought to the club to fix our halves problem. We are inexperienced in the most important positions in the game, especially in the halves, and also at fullback.

"Fetuli Talanoa is doing a great job but he has only had four games. Other sides are very experienced in those positions. The Broncos have Karmichael Hunt and Darren Lockyer, the Roosters have Anthony Minichellio and Braith Anasta . . . they all have experienced guys.

"We just have to persevere, you can't ask for any more than that."

At a time like this that is just what I needed to read. Inspiring words from our captain.

I'm damn happy to hear him say that. Funny, we'll probably get our first win against the team we're least expected to beat.

Yes...I agree this kind of statement helps...Roy has been down on form....but still a mile better than the majority of his fellow forwards.

However I also feel it is also a desperate plea to keep his teammate and Co Captain Kidwell from the chopping block he should be facing this week.

Personally, I believe that David is not playing league of first grade standard at the moment and needs to find some form in the lower grades.

The silly penalties he is giving away at the moment lead me to believe that David too is also frustrated with his own form, which at the moment is sub standard of what is required from a co leader.

However, call me cynical but based on previous selection history by JT in his tenure at the club, the team announced this week will basically be the same as last week. :mad0228:

That's a massive turn around from 2 weeks ago when he said he didn't give a dam what anyone said about him or the team... Has someone been whispering in big Roy's ear...???

As for the top 8 prediction... well... how about we start by winning ONE game first!

Well big bad Roy Asotasi has come out saying the winless Rabbitohs are still capable of making the NRL finals.

He'd be hard pressed convincing me that they won't take home the wooden spoon in 2008 - but to suggest they can make the top eight?

That's a gee-up, isn't it?

Roy – you are a world class prop and one of my personal favourites. But I think you might have taken one too many knocks last week.

I love your wishful thinking, it's very admirable, but the Rabbitohs are missing one crucial ingredient which all top-eight team generally require.

Talent.

Sure, they may have a host of young kids with plenty of promise...but how can a team who has gone through five halves combinations in six weeks possibly shape up against teams with the likes of Lockyer, Prince, Thurston and Anasta?

Asotasi bravely pointed to the Dragons for inspiration.

In 2005, the mighty Red V lost five from their opening six matches of the season before surging home to finish second on the ladder.

Last year, the Dragons pipped the Titans in their inaugural NRL match... before embarrassingly dropping six on the trot to sit at 15th on the ladder. They then notched up consecutive victories, culminating in a 58-16 demolition of the Raiders.

Mathematically, big Roy might have a point - Souths can certainly still make the finals. Realistically, he's dreaming.

There is one rather enormous difference between the Dragons' team of 2006 and the Bunnies team of 2008.

Their playing rosters.

At the start of 2006, the Dragons were a star-studded bunch of under-achievers. They had a team comprising of quality players grossly out of form.

The likes of Trent Barrett, Mark Gasnier, Matt Cooper, Luke Bailey, Ben Hornby and Jason Ryles were always going to find their mojo - and when they did, the Dragons breathed fire once again.

This South Sydney outfit, on the flip side, is comprised of a bunch of up-and-comers who are actually playing reasonably well.

Unlike the Dragons, the Bunnies aren't 'waiting' for the likes of Ben Rogers, Fetuli Talanoa, Eddie Paea and Beau Champion to 'find form'.

They are in form. They just aren't elite players yet - it's as simple as that.

Now I'll admit, I might be being a little harsh on the poor old Bunnies, but for a team to crumble the way they did against the Tigers on Sunday indicates an overwhelming lack of confidence and inspiration.

I do have wraps on Jason Taylor as a coach, but here is his chance to prove himself.

Do you think the Bunnies have any hope of a finals berth? What steps should Jason Taylor be taking to reverse their chronic form slump?

Mathematically, big Roy might have a point - Souths can certainly still make the finals. Realistically, he's dreaming.... Steve 'Blocker' Roach
