Open Letter to Members from Shane Richardson

Fellow Members,

Well it’s certainly not the start we all wanted. There is a myriad of theories as to why we are in the position we are. As a Football team I know we are exploring every avenue to get that elusive win and kick start our season. I get asked each day about when that win is going to happen. I thought that I would share with you my philosophy on the handling of our present position.

I remember when I first went to Penrith. We had won the wooden spoon the previous season and started the season with a 60-point thrashing by the dreaded enemy Parramatta. We then embarked on a horror run of losses.

After one particularly dreadful performance against the Wests Tigers I decided to take it upon myself to blast the team and its performance in the papers. I got some great emails from supporters who felt the same way and lots of pats on the backs by some directors as well. All was fine until John Lang fronted me on Monday morning with a blast I will always remember.

Was I part of the team or was I someone who was separate? If I had felt so strongly why didn’t I have the guts to say it to them directly? Did this help solve the problems we faced as a club or did it actually add to the pressure? I had been wrong because I was not being part of the solution and in reality was not making myself part of the team.

So I can’t give guarantees about when the next win will be. Hell, I thought we would have won more by now. I have relayed my thoughts directly to the players and coaching staff and not the papers. But what I can tell you is the following:

1. You have a team that is sticking together on and off the field to solve the problem;
2. You have a coaching staff that is working tirelessly to get that win;
3. You have a group of players who are as frustrated as the Members about the result and are working their butts off to turn it around;
4. We will get playing staff back which will assist, Issac Luke and Nigel Vagana this week and Greenfield and Wingy over the next few weeks. This will help.

Don’t think for one minute that we haven’t been looking at the tough calls behind the scenes. Don’t think for one minute that we aren’t exploring every avenue.

As Members you have already shown your loyalty to the team by buying your membership. It’s not your ticket into the ground that you have bought but a ticket into the family that is the Rabbitohs. I know how hard it is to go into work or school on Mondays after another loss.

Just remember you are part of the Red and Green Army. You are a major part of the solution. You are a major part of the next hundred years of Rugby League for our great club.

Keep the faith as so many of you have done for so long. We are building a strong club for the future.

And me, well I’m beavering away and trying to be part of the solution and making sure that JT and the players get the support to solve our current situation.

It’s a time for calm not panic. For hard work not quick fixes. And trying to avoid another Langy-like spray!

*Lied to members and sponsors in 2005 that we had signed Anasta and Orford.
*The resulting 2006 season was the worst in nearly 50 years.
*Signed on your mate Shaun McRae in a typical nepotist act.
*Extended McRae's contract at the start of 2006, lumbering the club with yet another massive payout when JT's manager hoodwinked PHaC.
*Lied to members in 2005 saying the move to Telstra Stadium would make the club "financially secure for the future". (how could the club then be $3 million in debt and needing rescuing by Crowe at the end of that year?)
*Assisted a totally incompetent SSDRFLC Board in hiding the 2005 Annual Report from members
*Lied to members by making a statement in 2005 that we would be playing "all our home games" at Telstra in 2006. (Secretly arranging to play games at Gosford)
