Rabbitohs cap breach proposed at Crowe's home
CHRIS BARRETT
May 6, 2010

THE meeting in which a South Sydney official raised the prospect of the Rabbitohs flaunting the salary cap was held at Russell Crowe's Woolloomooloo home.

The suggestion of a clandestine circumvention of the $4.1 million cap, made at a meeting of the Souths senior management that was discussing recruitment and retention, was revealed on Tuesday night by former coach Jason Taylor. He told the Herald the staff member asked the group: "Are we going to look at doing some things outside the salary cap?"

It emerged yesterday the venue for the meeting, held early in Taylor's three-year tenure at the club from 2007 to 2009, was co-owner Crowe's $14 million penthouse at the Woolloomooloo Finger Wharf. Crowe's Sydney management could not comment yesterday – the actor is on a promotional tour in Europe for the film Robin Hood – but Souths' other co-owner, Peter Holmes a Court, said yesterday he had been present when the idea of bypassing the cap was raised.

Taylor has stressed that no action was taken over the staff member's query, and Holmes a Court reiterated that Souths had always complied with the restrictions of the cap under his and Crowe's watch.

"I was at that meeting," Holmes a Court said. "It was raised as a question and it was thoroughly refuted. It's highly misleading to say it was discussed. It was not discussed, it was raised by somebody. It was shot down in flames."

Holmes a Court said he could not recall exactly who was present. "Committee meetings of the recruitment and retention committee happen on a regular basis over a long period of time," he said. "Sometimes everyone would be there and sometimes others would be there."

He said the idea that Souths would contemplate cheating the cap was "absolutely against everything we had done in rebuilding the club".

Crowe and Holmes a Court bought 75 per cent of the foundation club in 2006.

"It's about rebuilding a club and rebuilding a culture which starts with honesty and appropriate behaviour," Holmes a Court said. "Once you've set your values, those become your guiding principles and it becomes an 'of course not' approach when someone says 'should we go and do x and y', whether it's the salary cap or goin' out drinking for long hours in a public place."

Taylor and Holmes a Court were on Tuesday night both guests on the SBS program Insight, which brought together fans, journalists, administrators, player agents and sponsors to debate the standing of the NRL salary cap and the penalty dealt out to the Melbourne Storm for systematic breaches.

Taylor, the former Souths coach sacked last September, said that other clubs were having the same conversations about getting around the cap with extra payments to players, adding that "some act on them and some don't".

NRL chief executive David Gallop said Taylor's revelation showed the merits of dishing out severe punishments to clubs as a deterrent against rorting the salary cap.

"The club [South Sydney] decided against that course of action and it's difficult to therefore take it anywhere," Gallop said. "But one of the reasons that the penalty for this kind of thing has to be significant is not only to make sure there's a consequence but also to send a message of deterrent to others."

What an absolute nothing story.

Someone proposed something against the rules, off the cuff several years ago and was shot down in flames. Big Deal!

I'm sure that conversations like this would have occurred at every club in the comp at some stage in the past three or four years.

If anything, this story and its relatives in the papers over the last few days have just served to remind everyone of how childish Jason Taylor is.

JT, you did the wrong thing and copped the sack. Deal with it like a Man.

I agree that JT is childish, but I think his story about what happened at Crowe's home is relevant. It raises questions about the club and the salary cap that remain unanswered.

That Holmes a Court thinks he is fit to preach publicly on integrity shows what a man of dishonour he really is. Peter is the most dishonest man ever involved with the club.

Russell Crowe boasted in the overseas media yesterday about putting in a bender on the grog with his wife recently.

Crowe has a history of thuggish drunken and racist misbehaviour that makes JT look like a choir boy.

Peter should be having that dig at Russell.

Such a nothing story, Jason Taylor is a bitter little man if he has something to say then come out and do it properly. PHAC made a reasonable point at the time that Jason Taylor had chosen his words very carefully. The conversation could have been "we can get xx player a new car from xx sponsor" so someone asks " can we do that outside the salary cap?". Not really a big deal considering third party sponsorships are outside of the salary cap.

To be talking about this in the same breathe as the Storm is bullshit.

DIEHARD

If Souths had any skeletons in the cupboard that JT knew about you would think they would in the public domain by now. About the only way clubs seem to get busted cheating the salary cap is by being dobbed in by disgruntled ex employees such as Jason Taylor.

I disagree. He himself goes on to state that nothing ever came of the discussion so why bring it up? Talking about doing something and actually doing something are completely different animals. If you could be convicted for merely talking about breaking the law, Megan Fox could have me convicted on multiple Sexual Assault charges tomorrow!

That Holmes a Court thinks he is fit to preach publicly on integrity shows what a man of dishonour he really is. Peter is the most dishonest man ever involved with the club.

Quite possibly, but for JT to come out in the media and make any sort of statement about Souths whilst claiming it to be untainted by bias is just as big a porky as anything Holmes a Court has said in that article.

Different Kind of Rabbitoh: please tell us your opinion of Peter Holmes a Court and Shane Richardson.

Why would I want to do that?

A family member I have a lot of respect for once told me that its better to let people think you're an idiot than to open your mouth and prove it. You may think whatever you like about me but I'd be an idiot to confirm anything either way.

At the moment, my views on either of those two are my own and thats the way I'd like to keep them. I have a very cosy spot on the fence right now and its taken me a few years to pick all the splinters out of my arse. No way am I moving any time soon.

Different Kind of Rabbitoh,

Posts you've made here are for the purpose of spinning the truth for Peter and Shane, so it's not surprising that you won't give your opinion of them. You post during football club hours conjouring the image of you sitting at a desk with Pie Eater's hand caressing your shoulder while telling you what to type.

Taylor is merely offering an opinion. Someone who coached the club for three years is entitled to a view. If that view concurred with yours, you'd be silent.

If you took the time to read it, Taylor has not made an allegation. There's no malice. In fact, what Taylor says is entirely corroborated by Holmes a Court.

There's obviously a nerve to be hit with salary cap issues and your over-reaction demonstrates that.

I hope this message finds you before the football club office closes for the day with Pie Eater still about to help relieve the tension you're obviously feeling today. Pie Eater might also help pick those splinters out of your arse.

DKOR, you should bear in mind that a journalist has written this story, not Jason Taylor. Taylor has provided information. I think if you look a little deeper Taylor is playing PHaC off a break. I think there is more coming.

PHaC claims to have absolute memory of what was said at the meeting but can't remember who was there... This sounds remarkably like some of the horseshit he dished up in the NSW Supreme Court last year. Couldn't remember emails, meetings, long phone conversations, conference calls and much of anything that would prove he was a conspirator. But he could remember when cornered that he had faked death threats and hired notorious mobster-associated private eyes to harangue club members.

Taylor is not accusing anyone of anything, it is PHaC who offers up the snide comment about Taylor.

When you accuse Taylor of misdeeds you should also take into consideration that Souths settled out of court with him for wrongful dismissal. Given Crowe and PHaC's litigious natures I don't think they would have taken this one on the chin unless they realised they would lose the court case. As is the case with out of court settlements this can safely be regarded as an admission. Taylor had them over a barrel.

I don't condone anything Jason Taylor has done. I didn't like the way he coached the side. But being sacked from Souths does not automatically make someone the spawn of Beelzebub. To react this way is simply childish and not very smart.

Where have I mentioned anything about my supposed love for PHaC or Richo?

The only post that even mentions Richo is-

"Apparently Richardson stated last night he will have 11k ticket holders by round 1 and 18k total members. $2.9 million in the bank before a ball is kicked."

All I was doing there was relaying a statement that was supposedly made at a club information night, for the purpose of discussion.

I also take exception to the above quote-

"The club website is 100% up to date. It's a bit harsh to expect the club to be able to get everything on the net."

which is incorrect. The actual quote was -

"lol, Google could be bringing up any result.

Player profiles from previous versions of the website, other peoples South Sydney websites etc etc. The club website itself is 100% up to date.

Its a bit harsh to expect the club to be able to vet everything on the internet... "

which was in response to someone questioning the accuracy of player profiles on the club website. I stand by what I said there. Sure, any company can control its own website and I think the Football club does a reasonable job. The Leagues club on the other hand....

Regardless, this website itself is a prime example that you cannot control everything that is written about an organisation on the Internet. Nor can you make sure that everything written about you on the net is accurate.

Regardless, the only thing that you can glean from my previous posts on this site is that I like to talk about Souths and I think that Capewell is a reasonable footballer. But you are entitled to keep digging if you like. You won't find anything that links me to working at the club because as I stated previously, I don't work for the club. I don't know Shane Richardson or PHaC and have never met either of them. All I know about them is what I have seen or read on this site and others, in the papers or on tv.

Botak, if you go back to what I said originally....

I just think its a bit rich that Jason Taylor tries to come across as someone who doesn't have an axe to grind when he obviously does. Thats all. In this case, as with many cases in the recent history of Souths, Taylor is one side of the story, PHaC is the polar opposite. I don't believe either are telling the truth and I think the truth in this particular case lies somewhere in between what they have both said. Taylor implies that there was talk of cheating, PHaC implies that although this happens, nothing has ever come of it.

Truth be told, I reckon if Taylor had split with the club under happier circumstances, this statement would never have come out of his mouth, which shows that he is acting like a spoilt little brat whilst trying to whore his "inside knowledge" out to the media at the same time.

I also think that South Sydney and many other clubs in the NRL are rife with salary cap fraud and PHaC is full of shit in this regard as well. Time will tell, but there is certain to be more coming out of all this and South Sydney will be one of many clubs who are frantically trying to hide the evidence as we speak.

When you were talking about creative writing, you had yourself in mind.

It's obvious what is going on and it only gets worse when you over-react and jump up and down. That you freely offer opinions about anything and everybody else, but refuse to do so about Richo and Peter, validates the saying that actions speak louder than words.

Out of all the atrocities that Peter is linked to, not a word of protest or disdain has left your lips, despite the lies, the faked death threats, the mobster-linked sleuths, and the leagues club with its throat cut.

The most indignant response from you was prompted by criticism of Holmes a Court.
