Luck like rabbit's foot as Crowe witnesses win
Stuart Honeysett | May 05, 2008

HE'S played a Roman gladiator and a boxer but Oscar-winning actor Russell Crowe yesterday added another virtuoso performance to his long list of roles - that of good luck charm. Crowe jetted in from the US yesterday to watch his struggling South Sydney Rabbitohs win their first game of the season so far against the North Queensland Cowboys at ANZ Stadium.

Crowe reportedly arrived at the ground just as the Rabbitohs scored their first try midway through the first half and, after pumping his fist in triumph during the 28-24 victory, was among the first to congratulate the players in the dressing rooms.

"It was good to see him and he came up to us after the game and said congratulations and shook everyone's hands," Souths forward David Kidwell said.

"He's as passionate as any player, and it was great to see him. Bit of a surprise, actually."

Having bought the club and saved it from extinction, Crowe, along with co-owner Peter Holmes a Court, has often been regarded as the saviour of South Sydney and events yesterday are only likely to strengthen that belief. He flew in from Los Angeles, where he had stopped post-production on the Robin Hood film Nottingham. It was also the first time Crowe had made it to a Rabbitohs game this season.

Souths coach Jason Taylor said he felt his side had been building towards a win but Crowe's presence added another dimension to yesterday's contest.

"Things started to fall into place and I thought Russell's going to be at the game. He's that sort of a bloke," Taylor said.

While his on-screen performances have earned him an Oscar, Crowe left it to Taylor to do all the talking in the dressing shed.

Russell's smart enough to realise that it's the coach who should be doing the talking after a win.

I'd say the players would response 1000 times better to Russell than to Holmes a'Court.

At least Russell knows (and can remember) the players names :winking0052:

I agree with both of you. Russ is our man unlike that other imposter.
