MORE than half of Greg Inglis's $1.8 million three-year deal with South Sydney has been counted in the club's base salary cap, with five third-party sponsors making up the rest. The contract, which Rabbitohs officials expect to lodge with the NRL today, is similar to the two-year deal Inglis reneged on with the Broncos, who had intended to include him under the salary cap for $300,000 a season.

There is no NRL rule stating a percentage of a player's income must be included in the salary cap. The Herald reported earlier this year that Brisbane captain Darren Lockyer was listed under the salary cap at $250,000 a season, while St George Illawarra reportedly registered Mark Gasnier for $140,000 this year.

Souths propose to register Inglis under the salary cap for $215,000 next season and $350,000 in 2012 and 2013. Those figures include a car valued at $25,000 under the cap.

However, the 23-year-old Test star will earn more from his move to Redfern as the third-party deals he had secured in Brisbane totalled $230,000 a season, taking his income for each of his two years at the Broncos to $530,000.

The Rabbitohs deal includes $100,000 from one major sponsor, which counts as part of Souths' $300,000 marquee player allowance, and $200,000 from third-party deals with four non-club sponsors.

As a result, Inglis will earn $530,000 next season and $650,000 in 2012 and 2013.

NRL salary auditor Ian Schubert will review the contract in full but Rabbitohs officials believe there is no reason for him to reject any of the third-party deals.

A short-form contract was lodged with the NRL on November 15 but Inglis formalised the deal only on Wednesday as it took time to finalise the third-party deals. Some of the sponsors had expressed an interest in becoming involved with him only two days before he agreed terms on November 12.

After being forced out of Melbourne because the club's massive salary cap breaches obliged it to shed about $1 million in playing talent for next season, Inglis agreed to a two-year deal with Brisbane. He did not sign a contract, and the Broncos withdrew their offer on November 6.

The collapse of the deal followed a stand-off between Inglis and the Storm over the payment of legal costs from his defence of a charge of assaulting fiancee Sally Robinson, whom he is due to marry next month.

Inglis maintains Melbourne should pay for the cost of a QC engaged by the club but Schubert has determined that any contribution by the Storm towards the $117,000 bill will be considered a termination payment and included in their salary cap next year.

With News Ltd as a common owner, it was difficult for the Broncos to support Inglis in his dispute with the Storm. Souths, lacking this constraint, is working with him to find a resolution.

Until then, Inglis remains officially contracted to Melbourne. NRL officials are believed to be unimpressed that Rabbitohs co-owner Russell Crowe spruiked the club's signing of Inglis in an interview with talk-show host Jay Leno on US television, before the player's release from the remaining two years of his Storm deal.

Both clubs yesterday said they hoped the issue would be resolved within the next week.

Officials still hope Inglis will make his first appearance for Souths in a pre-season trial against Gold Coast at Coffs Harbour on February 19. If not, they expect him to have recovered from a hip operation he underwent yesterday in time for the opening round clash with Sydney Roosters three weeks later.

Inglis will miss the NRL All Stars match on February 12 and the Charity Shield, which has been rescheduled to February 13 at ANZ Stadium after St George Illawarra yesterday confirmed they would play in the World Club Challenge against Wigan on February 27.

The Gasnier and Lockyer comparisions are mute.

Lockyer has been in the game for over a decade. Inglis a mere four years.

Gasnier only played less than half a season with Saints, so there's no comparision there to Inglis.

Inglis won't be back playing until April. The club stating it will be earlier is baloney.

A bit unfair Perp, Souths don't talk baloney, take Ben Ross for example, Souths said he would play in the Charity Shield, all fans thought they were talking about 2010, of course they mean't 2011 .... same with Wesser, they knew he would play a full season it was just 2010 not 2009, same with Crocker they are aiming for 2011......

Mute or moot? Why should the Inglis deal not operate under the same rules as Lockyer or Gasnier? Gee you speak some crap, no credibility Perp, not one ounce.

I fail to see how the Perp's credibility is on the line. I think it is Russell Crowe's and Shane Richardson's credibility that is up for question. I too have had this 'no credibility' call leveled at me because people have read something I've written they didn't like - many times. It doesn't make it any less true. The reader needs to have a look at why it is they want to deny logic in front of them. It is a peculiar human trait, and why mass religion is regarded as legitimate and not a form of collective madness. The 'no credibility' call is really saying 'don't say that anymore, I can't bear to face it'.

I still fail to see that if the Schubert ratifies this contract, what the problem is. I have no doubt this could have been handled better by Souths and I wish it was but we were always pushing water up hill with Inglis coming to South. He was going from 1 NEWS LTD to another in a sport half owned by NEWS LTD. Surely you remember the smear campain against us they led trying to get us out. Why now when we are on the verge of farking them over again would it be any different. Where was all this scrutiny when he was being pushed from the Storm to the Broncos, I bet there wouldn't have been any. Their deal was along similar lines, with third party deals.

$250k a year for Lockyer under the cap? Surely that is after his 10 year bonus, so he would be getting paid $500k by the club, then more by the sponsors? Surely????

What a fucking joke this salary cap is. Gasnier $140k. Nathan Merritt and Fetuli Talanoa get paid more than he does. John Sutton and Roy Asotasi are immortals in the $400k range.

The NRL has no credibility.

BB King and others are right here - I am not proud of the way our club has conducted itself. Richardson and now Crowe have opened the club to smear, but the true story here and now is the sheer disgrace of the salary cap, and News Ltd's last attempt at manipulation (hopefully) in this game.

The sooner these pricks are kicked out of our game, the better.

Yes, moot, Mars. You finally got something correct.

I'm glad I don't have credibility with you, Mars, because if I did I'd be in the same boat as Richardson and your newest best pal Alan Jones.

The more you repeat your silly insult, Mars, the more I know you've run out of ideas. So keep it up. We all find you amusing.

I spoke out against the Storm and News Limited when all those atrocities happened. But it doesn't make them any better because we are doing the same thing.

The laws should be applied to us and to them. Our owners and officials tell so many lies that it's impossible to believe anything they say.

People only have to reflect on what Russell and Peter have done to the leagues club to see that rules and the truth mean nothing to them.

I am amused by the "No Credibility" claims towards the Perp and to the Botak, Their information is remarkably accurate and in the Botaks case he was good enough for Crowe and HAC to support and encourage in his release of information none of which was found to be wrong. The credibilty or lack of call is from those who once supported George and Now Hudson and Nabors as they have been called by the Perp (nice comparison) and who blindly accept everything Crowe tells them which is a recipe for disappointment and disaster.
May I ask why Souths should be treated differently to other clubs and noneof you understand the workings of the salary cap and expemptions and inclusions. It is not the NRL who have paid overs to your players and have backended numerous contracts. Open your eyes and minds it is no conspiracy theory which seems to be popular amongst Souths fans who follow Crowe like Lemmings. Without the efforts of teh Botak and the Perp to keep Crowe and Phat Phuc under observation then you will end up back where you were under George.
