A RELIEVED Souths coach Jason Taylor awoke at 6.30am yesterday with a rare Monday smile.

"For the past seven weeks I'd wake up hoping I'd had a nightmare after we'd lost. This morning I hoped I wasn't dreaming after we'd won," said Taylor, after his Rabbitohs won their first game of the season a day earlier against the Cowboys.

"Because you work so hard in this job I've never had a problem sleeping at night.

"But it's the first thoughts you have in the morning that have been tough.

"I'd usually lay there wondering how I'd get through things and the thought of another tough week.

"There were some real demons for me as far as getting out of bed.

"You think about reality, but the reality this morning was that we'd won a game."

Taylor said while it was great to have the "monkey off the back", there was still a lot of work to do to ensure the Rabbitohs built on their victory over North Queensland.

While Souths have the bye this weekend, Taylor said he would resist the urge to rest his players.

"If we were going better and there wasn't much to work on, I probably would have given us more time off," he said. "But we'll probably have Tuesday and Wednesday off and then get straight back into it."

The coach said he had received a text message from the club's Hollywood owner Russell Crowe late Sunday which said "the skies will be bluer on Monday".

Taylor said he was pleased with his side's defence near the try line and liked the way his players, especially Dean Widders, kept their composure. Widders and his teammates appeared satisfied for the first time when rolling up to Cook and Phillip Pool at Hyde Park.

Beau Champion, who scored a double, said Souths would only get better with the likes of Craig Wing and Michael Greenfield to return from injury.

Nathan Merritt wished there was no bye this weekend and that Souths could continue to gather momentum while John Sutton said there were no problems remembering the words to the team song which was sung loud and proud for the first time on Sunday.

The Rabbitohs have not given up hope on reaching the finals with Taylor admitting victory was needed against the Cowboys if they were serious about not giving up hope on 2008.

Russell is an absolute sweetheart.
Thankfully he is the real deal!!!
